Here is the development of my Pinus Mugo that won

Here is the development of my Pinus Mugo that won a gold medal at Germany’s national bonsai exhibition BCD last weekend. It was a really beautiful, outstanding exhibition. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved once again. The development with first design appeared as an article in the bonsai magazine Bonsai Art in number 174. This Mugo is a special tree because it was not dug up but airlayered in its natural habitat. This technique is used relatively rarely with pines and is almost exclusively possible with Pinus mugo and some Pinus uncinata species. The technique is used for trees that cannot otherwise be dug up due to their root ball, or only with a high risk, or to root individual branches of large trees.

The pine comes from the alpine border region between Germany and Austria, where it was airlyered in 2012.

Just repotted „Jabba the Hood“ from a wooden box into a walsall studio pot with a new front. I took over the tree from a customer several years ago in a rather weak condition and have given it a bit of a makeover over the last few years. Just potted this Celtis sinensis into a Shirokouch

Just potted this Celtis sinensis into a Shirokouchi pot after three years of rest in a Tiepot. I had collected the tree as a seedling in 2009 during my apprenticeship in Japan on one of my monthly free days in the Meiji Jingu Gyoen park in Tokyo along the wayside together with a few other seedlings.
The tree could of course be much thicker and more mature at this stage of growth. Unfortunately, it had suffered a bit a few years ago. In addition, I only cultivated the tree in relatively small pots. #bonsaifromseed #bonsai #brosebonsai

Here is a photo from 2012 of an Acer palmatum var. Kyohime that I will be exhibiting at the Bonsai Trophy in Belgium next weekend. For me, the tree is connected with a very interesting and inspiring trip with Oyakata to Kanuma to various nurseries. I found this maple in one of the nurseries. It was very fascinating to see how the man at this nursery works. He explained various techniques and showed how he bent strong branches of azaleas, which he wrapped with rope, quite strongly. It was also interesting how he shaped the trees in a natural expressive deciduous style, which is rather rare in the Japanese azalea world. Here are also a few more impressions from the trip.

Here is one of my oldest Juniperus Sabina, the first design is published in 2020 as an article in Bonsai Focus magazine. I have now reworked it again, which I actually wanted to do much earlier. After it had grown very healthily and vigorously over the last few years. I removed some branches from the crown to make it lighter again, create more empty spaces and compress the upper part of the crown a little. As the tree also has very beautiful shari and trunk sections on the back, I tried to design the tree so that it would ultimately look good from both sides. The first two pictures are now after the current revision. The third picture is before and the last one before the initial design. The next pot will be a round one. I think it will improve the overall picture even more.

A few steps of the first design process of a Pinus

A few steps of the first design process of a Pinus Silvestrys that I made at the beginning of 2022. Many thanks for assisting to my friend Vladi. The first picture is after the second styling now in December 2024 the second picture is before the first styling. This is followed by the steps of the first design with a few strong bends. For me, the prerequisite for this work is always that the tree is super vital and receives good aftercare.

Here are some pictures of the development of this Pinus Watereri over the last two years. The first styling was done in November 2022. In spring 2023 the tree was repotted in its new angle. The second styling was in December 2024. The first photo is of the current state after the styling, the second before the first styling in 2022. The following pictures are steps of the first styling. As the angle could not be optimally adopted during repotting, this will be further improved during the next repotting.

I’ve just defoliated and pruned this beech Chuhin. I’m enjoying this tree more and more. Started it years ago as a rough material. After the old pot cracked last year, this spring it went into a Nakatawari Nanban pot. It was the only suitable one I had. It’s certainly not to everyone’s taste, but I like the slightly rustic touch to the tree. #fagussylvatica #bonsai #brosebonsai

Here is an elm tree that I received from a customer several years ago. The tree used to have a typical mass-produced S. shape and the most of the upper part was dead. I cut the tree back to the first branches. I used these to rebuild the tree to create a more natural-looking compact deciduous tree. It is slowly taking shape. Over time, when some volume is added, the tree will get even better.
